How many times have you heard someone — or maybe you yourself — say they never learned something in school that they absolutely could use today? Perhaps it was taxes. Perhaps it was the ability to understand money management, or complex financial terms. Or maybe you just wish a class you took taught you the basics of starting a business.

Junior Achievement (JA) of the Heartland is a non-profit organization predicated on bestowing such information to young students. Their education goals are straight-forward: work readiness, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. They want to create the next generation of successful businessmen and women.

Scott Ellerbach, Senior VP of Community Relation with JA of the Heartland, came by the studio to talk about the upcoming JA of the Heartland Golf Classic. Set to take place Monday, September 11th at 11am at Meadows Golf Club, the event helps raise money for an organization committing to instilling financial and business sense in the next generation of entrepreneurs in Dubuque and the Tri-State area.

When speaking about the Golf Classic, Ellerbach noted that it'll be a full day of events and fun:

Come out and enjoy a great day of golf. Noon shotgun start [following an 11am lunch]. We'll have well over 100 golfers again this year, and the Meadows is a beautiful course. They've got a brand new clubhouse for all of our golfers to experience this year as well. We're excited. All the money we raise from the Golf Classic will go to support local students. That's huge for us to be able to have such a good turn out of golfers in support of Junior Achievement and the kids we impact.

Ellerbach also spoke about the need for volunteers with JA of the Heartland. The school year serves as the organization's busiest season, and they need folks willing to help make a difference by going to schools and speaking with second grade students:

Every year, we need volunteers to go into the classroom and help deliver our programs. That's really where the magic happens. We have such a great group of volunteers that help us every year. They bring in that real-world experience, and they can share with students how to get on the path they did [....] the volunteers that help us are fantastic.

More details on the JA of the Heartland Golf Classic, happening September 11th, 2023 at Meadows Golf Club, are available on JA's website. Take a listen to my interview with Scott Ellerbach below!
