Matt Walsh could presumably be considered a "that guy" actor. You know the type. The kind you instantly recognize whenever he appears in a movie, but one whose name you don't automatically know. However, after his supporting role on the hit HBO show Veep earned him two Primetime Emmy nominations, the waves he's been making can't be ignored.

Walsh has appeared in numerous comedies big and small: from The Hangover and Elf to indie gems like The Brass Teapot and Brigsby Bear. His next film has a lot in common with the latter films. It's called The Good Half, and stars Nick Jonas, Elisabeth Shue, David Arquette, and other recognizable faces. It's a notable heel-turn for the veteran, Chicago comic, as it's more of a drama as opposed to a no-holds-barred comedy.

Matt Walsh was kind enough to join me on the phone to talk The Good Half and other projects in which he's been involved. Set for a theatrical release via Fathom Events on July 23rd and 25th, The Good Half revolves around a man (Jonas) who has just lost his mother. He returns to his hometown of Cleveland, OH to reconnect with his father and some of his hometown friends.

Judging by the trailer, it's a movie that definitely owes itself to being a slice-of-life. Walsh talked about how the intimate dynamics of the story had the cast behaving like a family. He also got to meet David Arquette, who he said left him star-struck. Being that Arquette recently acquired the rights to the character Bozo the Clown, who came to prominence in Chicago, the two found an easy-in for a bonding point.

Beyond The Good Half, Walsh shared a priceless detail about the set of the movie The Hangover, and what significant US/world event was taking place the day they filmed his scene.

In addition, Walsh talked about some of the more under-seen gems in his filmography. He (and I) can't recommend Brigsby Bear enough (streaming on Amazon Prime Video, FYI). He also touched on how he got involved with the critically reviled sketch comedy movie Movie 43 back in 2011, and gave a couple predictions for his beloved hometown Chicago Bears, which warmed my heart to hear.
