The hockey world far and wide will be feeling this hurt and heartache for a longtime after devastating news regarding one of the most gentlemanly players in the NHL, along with his brother, were killed in a tragic accident in their home-state on August 29th, 2024.

Former Dubuque Fighting Saints alum Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, were bicycling on Pennsville Auburn Road in Oldmans Township, New Jersey when they were struck and killed by a vehicle, per New Jersey State Police. The Columbus Blue Jackets, for whom Gaudreau played, also took to X early Friday morning to confirm that Johnny and his brother Matthew died.

The Columbus Blue Jackets are shocked and devastated by this unimaginable tragedy. Johnny was not only a great hockey player, but more significantly a loving husband, father, son, brother and friend. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to his wife, Meredith, his children, Noa and Johnny, his parents, their family and friends on the sudden loss of Johnny and Matthew. - per the Columbus Blue Jackets' statement on the passing of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau

Before Gaudreau shined on the NHL ice for the Calgary Flames and Columbus alike, his hockey career started during the 2010-11 season with the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Gaudreau had one of the best seasons a player has had while wearing the red and white.

He was elected to the 2011 USHL All-Star Game, and helped the Saints win the Clark Cup as USHL champions in his lone season. He was also selected to the USHL All-Rookie Team and named the USHL Rookie of the Year.

Gaudreau even graduated from Dubuque Senior High School while kickstarting his hockey career in the Key City. His accomplishments led him to being selected in the fourth round (104th overall) in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames.

Gaudreau kept Dubuque hockey close to his heart too, as he was one of the minority owners of the Dubuque Fighting Saints at the time of his death.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman released a statement in lieu of the tragic news that Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau have passed away, even recalling the reason the talented winger got the nickname "Johnny Hockey:"

While Johnny’s infectious spirit for the game and show-stopping skills on the ice earned him the nickname ‘Johnny Hockey,’ he was more than just a dazzling hockey player; he was a doting father and beloved husband, son, brother and teammate who endeared himself to every person fortunate enough to have crossed his path. - per NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman

More details regarding the accident that claimed the lives of these two young men will surely follow in the days and weeks. Right now, however, hearts around the hockey world are heavy. One can only anticipate the Dubuque Fighting Saints will hold some kind of in-game/arena memorial for their once-star player and minority owner.

One thing's for sure too: that beautiful poster of Johnny Gaudreau that lives on the wall of the ImOn Ice Arena will be looked at with sad yet grateful eyes for years to come.
