The sun was hot, but the air conditioning was cool inside BP Gas on East 16th Street in Dubuque. However, me and the great folks at Kwik Stop would've braved any condition to help those who have done so much for this country.

I was out from 11am to 1pm on July 18th, helping collect money for the Veterans Freedom Center. It's an extremely important cause that helps veterans right here in the Tri-States.

Veterans Freedom Center has created a special place for veterans to interact, socialize, and network with other veterans. The volunteer staff builds interpersonal relationships with veterans to assure they have a comfortable and safe space, filled with activities.

As was the case at my broadcast at Kwik Stop JFK earlier this month, Jim Wagner of the Veterans Freedom Center found his way to the microphone to talk about all the good the center does. 100% of the proceeds collected at Kwik Stop, Dairy Queen, and Fazoli's this month will go directly to the center.

Champs Chicken was also running a special during our broadcast: two chicken tenders for free from 11am to 1pm. You could upgrade to a meal (with two sides and a drink) for only $4.99.

The chicken was hot, the music was bumping, and the camaraderie was the cherry on top.

Those who donated in the big red bucket got their choice of a prize from Kwik Stop's table.

I'd go as far as to call Champs Chicken one of Dubuque's best kept secrets. The chicken is juicy, the variety of sides is noteworthy, and they even have fish!

Through their Kwik Care program, Kwik Stop, Dairy Queen, and Fazoli's have seen the community's spare change add up to almost $2 million since 2008.

You can donate to Veterans Freedom Center throughout the month of July. Look for the specially marked gas pumps at Kwik Stop, the "Kwik Care" canisters at Kwik Stop, Dairy Queen, and Fazoli's, or even round up your total at checkout if you're paying with a credit/debit card!

Thanks again to the awesome people at Kwik Stop and BP on East 16th Street for having us out for another fun event!

LOOK: See how much gasoline cost the year you started driving

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
