Riverview Center is hosting an open house/ribbon cutting event in their parking lot from 4-6pm on June 21st.

Billed as "an evening of fun for the whole family," per the event's Facebook page, Riverview Center will be offering free ice cream, face-painting, games, and refreshments. It looks to be an event for the community, bringing people together while also promoting the mission and services of Riverview Center.

Courtney Chaffee, Associate Director of Development and Public Relations for Riverview Center, stopped by the studio several weeks ago in conjunction with the "Dubuque Dances with the Stars" event at Five Flags Center. You can find that interview here.

"[We] are a sexual assault advocacy agency for Dubuque County," Chaffee said in the interview, when talking about Riverview. "We are the 24/7/365 hotline, crisis response service if somebody does need sexual assault advocacy, and also provide long-term general advocacy and counseling as necessary."

Riverview Center works with victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. Of course, there's no one-size-fits-all template for this line of work. Recovery looks and feels different for each individual, and advocacy, in itself, has many dimensions. Riverview Center prides themselves in assisting survivors by ways of "self-determination and autonomy, feeling heard and validated, and social support," per their introductory pamphlet.

"If you do need immediate help, we have our hotline number [....] 888-557-0310," Chaffee said in our interview. "There are crisis-trained advocates who will answer the phone all the time. It could be an assault that happened yesterday or years ago. We will work with you and help you process whatever you need."

Riverview Center also prides themselves on being inclusive to their core. They believe in access to support for everyone, including, but not limited to: college students, people who live in rural areas, identify as LGBTQIA+, people of color, and more.

I plan on attending Riverview Center's open house. It's a cause that's very easy to get behind, with some great individuals leading the organization.

The ribbon cutting/open house will take place on June 21st from 4-6pm at Riverview Center's Dubuque location at 1789 Elm Street, Suit C. More information can be found on the event's Facebook page.
