A large food producer in Massachusetts has issued a recall for over 24,000 pounds of sausage that might be contaminated with errant plastic pieces. The recall has been reported by The Hill and numerous other sources.

The Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), announced the recall last week (July 17th). The company in question is Kayem Foods Inc, headquartered in Chelsea, MA, and is for a significant amount of sausage products to have been shipped to retailers nationwide, including in Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin.

What is Being Recalled?:

Kayem Foods Inc. is recalling 24,173 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken sausage products following complaints from consumers concerning foreign material in the food. No injuries were reported at this time, but the material is widespread enough to warrant a recall:

FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase - the alert regarding Kayem Foods' chicken sausage, per The Hill

The Affected Products:

  • The recalled sausages are in 11-ounce vacuum-packed packages stating “All natural al fresco chicken sausage sweet apple with Vermont made syrup.”
  • The affected packages have “P-7839” printed inside the USDA mark of inspection.
  • Affected packages also have the lot code “179” and a “USE/FRZ BY” date of Oct. 1, 2025 on the back label.

Again, the cause for concern deals with the presence of foreign material, in this case, plastic, which could cause bodily/intestinal harm if consumed.
