Former Wisconsin Football Star Suffers Serious Leg Injury

UPDATE: Shortly after publishing this article, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter revealed that Tyler Biadasz suffered damage to his ACL and "additional injuries" to his left knee. He will consult doctors to get more clarity, and will be out indefinitely as a result.

Long-suffering fans of the Los Angeles Chargers news got some horrifying news yesterday when one of their big free agents went down with what could be a serious injury.

Every offseason, NFL fans and pundits alike seem to expect big things from the Chargers. Yet, as the season rolls on, it's as if there is a dark cloud hanging over the team that prevents them from taking the next step to be a legit playoff threat. Last year, the team's offensive line was ravaged by injuries, and quarterback Justin Herbert took a beating. The issues were season-long, but were exposed on the national stage when the New England Patriots beat them in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

The Chargers' New Center Just Went Down with an Injury:

In effort to fix their decimated offensive line, the Chargers went out and signed former Wisconsin Badger and Amherst native Tyler Biadasz, who has had a very successful NFL career as a center. Biadasz was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, where he played his first four seasons. After a two-year stint with the Washington Commanders, Biadasz signed a three-year, $30 million deal with the Chargers this offseason.

On Tuesday, August 19th, during a joint practice with the San Francisco 49ers, Biadasz was carted off the field with an apparent injury to his left leg. He went down after a 49ers defensive tackle Sebastian Valdez inadvertently fell into his leg during an 11-on-11 drill, per ESPN. Biadasz remained on the ground for several minutes being examined by trainers before being helped into a medical cart.

The Injury Appears to Be Severe with "Long-Term" Impact:

ESPN added that Biadasz was the biggest piece of the interior offensive line overhaul conducted by Chargers General Manager Joe Hortiz. In Biadasz's absence, second-round pick Jake Slaughter took reps at center. His primary position is left guard.

As of this writing, there is no update on Biadasz, but the general discussion around the injury, whatever it may be, is bleak. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo revealed today that the injury looks to be "long-term." Whether that's a majority or the entire season remains to be seen.

Tyler Biadasz Shined at Wisconsin:

During his time at Wisconsin, Biadasz served as an anchor for the Badgers offensive line from his sophomore year and beyond. He was a Unanimous All-American in 2019, and a two-time First-team All-Big Ten in 2018 and 2019.

This injury is a potentially catastrophic blow to the Chargers' already questionable offensive line. In a big year for head coach Jim Harbaugh and Herbert, this could have serious implications on the season, if the injury indeed proves to be long-term.
