Just when you thought the Savannah Bananas had one of the funniest names in all of baseball, a minor league team in Wisconsin with rich history in the sport is adopting a delicious, if cheesy, alternate identity for the upcoming 2025 season.

A little background: most minor league baseball teams adopt what is known as an "alternate identity" for at least a handful of games in the season. The reasons why are plentiful. Obviously, there is an opportunity to make money by selling a whole new line of merchandise. Moreover, however, because minor league baseball has so much player mobility (players getting "called up" to more prominent clubs, getting "called down" to lower level teams, or getting traded), teams must come up with creative ways to still remain connected to their communities.

Enter the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, a longtime member of the Midwest League, who, as of 2021, is the "High-A" affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. They have unveiled their alternate identity for the 2025 season. Keep in mind, this team has done a phenomenal job at cultivating alternate identities in recent history. Anyone remember the Wisconsin Udder Tuggers or the Lake Winnebago Shantymen?

Multiple times this season, the Timber Rattlers will be known as the Wisconsin Frozen Pizzas, per MILB.com. This is due to the fact that frozen pizzas are among one of the most popular foods in the state of Wisconsin.

According to a press release from MILB.com, people in the state of Wisconsin consume more frozen pizza than any other state in the country on a per capita basis. In addition, here are some other tasty facts:

  • Five of America’s largest frozen pizza brands started in Wisconsin and are still headquartered here
  • Many popular grocery stores in the state carry up to 50 different brands of frozen pizza from all over the country
  • Wisconsin’s large cheese production, manufacturing know-how, and big appetites all contribute to its frozen pizza dominance. - per MILB.com

The Frozen Pizzas will take on the South Bend Cubs at Neuroscience Group Field in Grand Chute, WI on Saturday, July 12th at 6:40pm. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Frozen Pizza Bobblehead present by Jack's Pizza (because of course!).

How did the Timber Rattlers conceive this name? Back in 2021, the team hosted a Frozen Pizza Throwdown at their home field, at which over a dozen Wisconsin brands of frozen pizza were sampled and consumed by fans. The event's popularity fueled the team's drive to make it one of their alternate identities.
