New Store in Kennedy Mall Caters to Japanese and “Nerd Culture”

Just in time for the holiday shopping season, a brand new store has opened in Dubuque's Kennedy Mall. It caters to Japanese, Anime, and all things "nerd culture."

Angry Fox in Dubuque is the second physical location for store owner Staci Powell, with her first operating in Janesville, WI. During some last-minute Christmas shopping at Kennedy Mall, I stopped by Angry Fox to make Staci's acquaintance and take some photos of her large, spacious new storefront.

Angry Fox already has a large assortment of items: figurines, plush toys, mock swords/katanas, snacks, collectibles, and various other Asian and anime items. Not only does Powell have her Janesville location, she also travels around the country to sell her merchandise at conventions and trade shows alike.

Powell's decision to open a second location in Dubuque came down to the fact that the anime community has a notable presence in the area, on top of wanting to provide Tri-Staters with a welcoming gathering space for the "nerd community."

Per the Biz Times, 80-90% of the merchandise is imported directly from Japan, which leads to frequent product rotation. This assures that even frequent consumers and visitors of Angry Fox will see different items in the store on each visit.

In our brief conversation, Powell credited the connectedness of the global shipping market for making these items accessible to American anime fans.

In addition to an abundance of Pokémon, Dragon Ball Z, and Sailor Moon memorabilia and collectibles, Angry Fox also offers an assortment of Japanese snacks and goodies. For someone like me, who is not entrenched at anime culture at all, I can definitely see Angry Fox being my go-to for Pocky and Hi-Chew.

At present, Angry Fox Dubuque's store is about half-stocked, but Powell has been assuring customers that with more shipments on the way, including before Christmas, the store will soon boast a full-stock of items for a variety of tastes.
