A new movie that's been gaining steam and notoriety on a popular streaming platform is actually helmed by a writer/director with Iowa roots.

The movie is Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice, a sci-fi action comedy that, at least on paper, seems to recall the spirit of Quentin Tarantino and other similar genre-hybrids like The Nice Guys. The film stars James Marsden, Eiza González, and Vince Vaughn (in a duel role), and revolves around two friends navigating the treacherous world of organized crime.

Meet BenDavid Grabinski:

The man behind Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is BenDavid Grabinski, who grew up in Grinnell, IA. As a kid, his only interest was becoming a filmmaker, so he opted to attend Iowa State University to study journalism.

Grabinski has worked on a plethora of projects leading up to his most recent, which is now streaming on Hulu. He wrote the Jackie Chan/Johnny Knoxville comedy Skiptrace in 2016. He was also one of the major individuals behind Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the adaptation of the popular graphic novel series for Netflix.

Grabinski's Connection to Another Iowa Native:

A funny little nugget I found when reading about Grabinski's career. In 2011, he wrote and directed a short film called Cost of Living, which starred Brandon Routh. A Des Moines native, Routh is probably most famous for playing the Man of Steel in Superman Returns. Routh apparently teamed up with Grabinski to star in the short as payment on a lost bet. If that's not a sterling addition to your resume, I don't know what is.
