This Might Be the Most Underrated Snack Sold at Casey’s

Every year, Catherine and I do an extensive amount of traveling all around the Tri-States and even as far as Oklahoma. With that comes our obligatory but welcomed stops at many different gas stations: Casey's, BPs, Kum & Gos that are now disappointingly being rebranded. Simply put, we know our service stations.

I've always been such a fan of these transitory places that I tend to traverse the aisles of gas stations and convenience stores with which I'm familiar. Just to see if the stock has changed, you know? A recent trip to Casey's to buy a drink and a go-to snack of mine got me thinking: this is one of my favorite light-bites available at the ubiquitous general stores, but I don't believe many people know what it is.

One of the Best Snacks You've Probably Never Tried:

Most Casey's have an aisle dedicated strictly to be pastries, be them Hostess, Little Debbie's, or Casey's very own cake bites, crunchers, and cookie sandwiches. Nestled between all those sugary delicacies is a hearty, circular pastry that looks strikingly different from everything else around it.

That item is the Pan De Queso Cheesecake by a company known as Buon Appetito (or "Bon Appetit" — it's confusing and not very clear). It caught my eye some months ago because of its moist-looking texture, traditional Mexican colors, and its heaping helping of sesame seeds. At $2.79, I've made worse financial decisions.

What is the Pan De Queso Cheesecake?:

Bon Appetit's website describes their pastry as being made with a "cheesecake-inspired bread with a creamy cheese flavor." Incredibly moist and filling, the snack also has a very pleasant honey taste and the sesame seeds atop the bread contributes a slight, inoffensive crunch.

Sidenote and added perk: there's also no trace of tree nuts, which helps me out, since that's my kryptonite! Long-live tree nut allergy visibility.

How Much is a Pan De Queso Cheesecake?:

A Pan De Queso Cheesecake will only run you roughly $2.79 at most Casey's locations. I'm fully prepared to see these start disappearing from the shelves of the Dubuque Casey's I frequent, but that's a cross I'm willing to bear. I love recommendations for snacks and drinks.
