A new study from High Risk Pay looked at Americans' favorite fast food French fries by state. Not only did Iowans' primary fry craving prove to be in the majority, it also shows just how iconic this particular side has become in America.

High Risk Pay surveyed 2,500 residents from all 50 states to determine each state's favorite fast food French fry. They also examined America's favorite style of French fries. Fries are among my favorite foods. They can be from a restaurant, frozen, or made from fresh potatoes. It doesn't matter. I've always had a hankering for French fries.

The Big Winners in the French Fry Study:

Per High Risk Pay's website, McDonald's fries were the overwhelming favorite across the country with the highest average rating (7.3/10). 99.7% of individuals surveyed said they have tried McDonald's fries, which further asserts the company as one of the biggest powerhouse corporations in all of America. In many ways, McDonald's is synonymous with "eating out."

Five Guys and Chil-fil-A took second and third place, respectively, scoring an average rating of 6.7/10. Over 80% of those surveyed have tried these fries, according to High Risk Pay.

Finally, Arby's took fourth place on what High Risk Pay called the "Mount Rushmore of French Fries." That's a curious choice, but I might be in the minority in not being a big fan of Arby's. That said, I'd argue that Burger King fries, which would you'd think have become more of a staple, have become blander and less distinctive than their counterparts. Wendy's changed their fry recipe in 2021, but are in the middle of a significant dip in sales and overall popularity.

Iowa's Favorite Fast Food Fry:

High Risky Pay notes that Iowans fall squarely in the majority. McDonald's French fries are the overwhelming favorite of Iowa residents, with an average rating of 7.7/10.

The Most Popular Styles of Fries in America:

High Risk Pay also looked at the favorite styles of French fries amongst Americans. Here are those results:

  • Thin / shoestring fries: 35%
  • Curly fries: 16%
  • Thick-cut / steak fries: 13%
  • Waffle fries: 13%
  • No preference in shape: 12%
  • Crinkle-cut fries: 10%
  • Sweet potato fries: 5%
