Recently, my wife and I had our first of two birthing classes at Mercy Hospital. We spent a majority of the time listening to our instructor give advice and watched short video clips. The short clip of the child birth was not shocking to me.

That's not to say I wasn't shocked by any of the footage. I didn't realize how active most women are as they try to cope with the contractions! I'll be 100% honest - I had NO idea what goes on during labor! I guess I always imagined the woman in a bed in pain and misery.

I've heard so many stories about what these classes consist of. Some have told me you watch an "in-depth" video of a child birth. Others have told me you get a hands-on lesson for massaging and comforting techniques.

Our class was not like this at all. Yes, we did watch short video clips and one did show a 2-second shot of a baby being born, but it wasn't the entire process. The only time we got out of our chairs was to go to the bathroom.

As I mentioned, this was the first of two classes so it's possible these could pop up in the second class, but it sounds like we have one more short slideshow lesson and then we tour the facility.
