In the midst of a rocky season for the San Francisco 49ers, the first-half defined by untimely injuries, a couple unfortunate losses, and the looming question of their quarterback's future contract extension, their leader still found time to give back to a young fan with a big wish.

Major Strube, a 10-year-old boy from Waukee, IA, got to his wish granted via Make-A-Wish Iowa. His wish was to attend a 49ers game and meet his football idol, quarterback Brock Purdy. The fourth-grader from Sugar Creek Elementary in Waukee has cystic fibrosis.

Per the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, cystic fibrosis is a genetic condition that affects a protein in the body. The faulty protein affects the body's cells, tissues, and the glands that produce mucus and sweat. Cystic fibrosis, commonly abbreviated as "CF," has become far more treatable in children thanks to medical advances, improved nutrition, and lung transplants.

Strube received the news that his wish to attend a 49ers game and meet Purdy would come true when surrounded by Waukee High School football players at practice. The surprise from Make-A-Wish Iowa also came with his own Purdy jersey to rock during the game.

Major's dad, Drew Strube, is an assistant coach of the high school football team. A family full of Iowa State Cyclones fans, Major and his family will attend a 49ers game in December. Drew had some wonderful words of pride for his son and the fact his wish was granted:

I'm just proud of everything that he does, and he does it like a champ. - Drew Strube, per KCCI

Purdy and the Niners have had a rocky start to the year with numerous injuries to integral players and some gut-punch losses. Beyond losing to divisional rivals in the Cardinals and Rams this year, the Niners have been without star running back Christian McCaffrey for the entire season, safety Talanoa Hufanga, and lost receiver Brandon Aiyuk to an ACL tear last weekend.

All that said, the 49ers beat the Dallas Cowboys last night to even out the year to return to .500 at 4-4 on the season. The talk of Brock Purdy's potential record-setting contract and what it means for the future of this version of the San Francisco 49ers has been deafening since the Niners lost the Super Bowl in February.

Regardless of whatever debate you want to have about Brock Purdy's capabilities, he remains a wonderful, charitable person off the field. The same can be said for Make-A-Wish Iowa, who granted 198 wishes in 2023, a record for the local chapter, per KCCI.
