Candy Sold at Major Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin Retailers Under Urgent Recall
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has upgraded a recall of nearly two dozen candies and snacks sold at major retailers; ones that are very prominent in Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin. This is an urgent recall, for the products in question can cause serious illness, and in rare cases, death.
The candies and snacks in question are products of Palmer Candy Co., which is based in Sioux City, Iowa. The initial recall began in May when it was found that the white candy coatings on the company's pretzels, cookies, and other miscellaneous snacks had been contaminated, per the FDA.
The recalled products were distributed nationwide in Dollar General, Hy-Vee, Target, Walmart, and Dollar Tree retailers in the following states:
- Alabama
- California
- Florida
- Illinois
- Iowa
- Kansas
- Missouri
- Nebraska
- North Dakota
- Oregon
- Pennsylvania
- South Carolina
- South Dakota
- Texas
- Virginia
- Wisconsin
- Wyoming
Presently, the FDA upgraded the recall of many Palmer Candy products to a Class I Level for the following reason: "there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequence or death," per the FDA's definition of a Class I Level recall.
A litany of Palmer Candy products are being recalled due to the fear that they could cause Salmonella. Salmonella is a bacteria that can find itself spread in any food production chain when food handlers do not wash their hands and the process therein becomes unsanitary. It can cause sometimes fatal infections in young children as well as elderly people, or those with weakened immune systems, per the CDC.
Palmer Candy CEO Marty Palmer said production of the products in question had been halted with an investigation imminent:
While there is a very, very small chance (of contamination), when you are working with food and safety, 99.9% is not 100%. Palmer Candy CEO Marty Palmer, per The Des Moines Register
It is thought that the problem with the recalled products involves dairy powders provided to the maker of the candy coating used in the candy and snacks.
