Did You Catch Dubuque on John McGivern’s Travel Show?
If you're a fan of travel shows, you absolutely should make a note to watch John McGivern's Main Streets. McGivern is a Milwaukee based actor/personality, who recently launched his own program dedicated to exploring the various quaint towns in the Midwest. He's probably best known for his role as Bruce McIntosh in the Disney movie The Princess Diaries, but he has also done commercials for the likes of Kohl's and Sears.
Perhaps the best part about Main Streets? It's free to watch on YouTube!
In February 2022, an episode dedicated to Dubuque, IA was released. The episode was a great find for me shortly after moving to the area. I've still got places to check out that were highlighted on the show!
McGivern travels to a host of local hot-spots. He spends some time at the Monastery Candy Factory, where he watches the convections come to life. The factory is run by Our Lady of the Mississippi Abby, a monastic community of Trappist nuns. He even helps make some of the Monastery's beloved chocolate-coated caramels, which feature the trademark chocolate swirl on top.
McGivern hangs out at the Dubuque Farmers Market, the oldest of its kind in the state of Iowa. The market runs on Saturday mornings from May to September. It offers locally sourced food as well as arts, crafts, and other items that would make great gifts.
