Rockford, IL Native NBA Player Suffers Devastating Injury
The Houston Rockets were dealt a devastating blow to their hoop dreams this season after it was reported that one of their veteran players had suffered a terrible injury during offseason workouts.
Rockets point guard and Rockford, IL native Fred VanVleet has been a fan favorite in the NBA for years. Heading into his tenth NBA season, VanVleet was a staple player for the Toronto Raptors for the majority of his career, after being signed out of Wichita State following the 2016 NBA Draft. He joined the Rockets in July 2023 on a three-year deal.

Fred VanVleet's Devastating Injury:
Fred VanVleet suffered a torn ACL during a recent offseason workout in The Bahamas, per The Athletic and multiple other sources.
Such an injury will likely sideline him for the entire 2025-26 NBA season, a significant loss for a Rockets team that just acquired two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant and is poised to make a Finals run with a young nucleus of players. A flurry of social media reactions to the injury show how valuable VanVleet is to a team looking to contend.
How Good is Fred VanVleet?:
VanVleet helped the Toronto Raptors win their first NBA championship in 2019, and earned All-Star honors in his final year with the team (2022). He signed a two-year, $50 million extension with the Rockets in June, which includes a player option in 2026-27, per ESPN.
In his first year with Houston, VanVleet helped the Rockets improve from 22 wins to 41. In his second year, VanVleet helped lead the team to 52 wins, good enough for the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. Thanks to his pivotal contributions, the Rockets qualified for the playoffs for the first time in four seasons.
Where Do the Rockets Go from Here?:
With VanVleet likely done for the year, eyes are now on young players like Reed Sheppard and Aaron Holiday to fill the gap. Amen Thompson, an ascending, two-way player, could also be in the mix. The Rockets are unable to fill the roster spot with a free agent signing due to their cap situation. Doing so would require the team to make a trade of some kind.
