Hilarious Video of Cedar Rapids Roller-Skating Rink Goes Viral
A video compilation set to music that shows people of various ages having fun at a Cedar Rapids roller-skating rink is going viral with the help of TikTok and Twitter.
The nearly two-minute long montage was filmed at Super Skate in Cedar Rapids, and shows a handful of young people skating around the large rink. This would perhaps be a boring or typical video if not for the presence of two things: a strangely hypnotic filter and the presence of a delightful, laidback rock song.
I stumbled on the video late last night scrolling through Twitter. As of this writing, the TikTok video itself has amassed over 64,000 likes, and another combined 27,000 likes and retweets on Twitter. The comments have proven themselves to be just as entertaining as the video itself.
Several have remarked how this video looks like it could've been shot in the 80s or 90s, given the washed-out colors and the general vibe of a bunch of people roller-skating the night away. Others have compared the video to the popular comedy movie Napoleon Dynamite (it could be because of the kid with a "I Love Older Women" shirt, which is in the same style/design as the quotable "Vote for Pedro" shirt in the movie). Others have said that this is peak Midwestern representation.
Of all the tweets revolving around the video, this one might be my favorite:
The "vibe" @EclecticHams, who shared the original video on Twitter, is referring to is that of Napoleon Dynamite, for the record.
When I first watched the video, I thought the song playing was "Eminence Front" by the Who. It has the same recognizable synths and riffs. Twitter corrected me in pointing out the song is actually a popular mashup of Metallica, Megadeath, and The Who. So... technically, I was 1/3rd correct!
Also included in the video is a shot of the offices at Super Skate. Why? I'm not sure, but it doesn't break the vibe this clip is trying to achieve. It reminded me of Richard Linklater's underrated movie Everybody Wants Some!!, which follows a group of college baseball players in the 1970s. I blame the washed-out colors.
