One of Chicago's most iconic pizzerias is down to only six locations after closing three this weekend, one third of its remaining restaurants.

Although they're maybe more known for their line of frozen pizzas, this is a brand that is a cultural institution in Chicago. They've been open since 1947, nearly 80 years, and they are synonymous with the tavern-style, square-slice pizza that is the real Chicago pizza. You can keep the deep dish.

Home Run Inn is now down to only six restaurants after closing three locations this weekend. It was reported by ABC 7 Chicago and multiple other outlets that Home Run Inn has closed their restaurants in Berwyn, Bronzeville, and Melrose Park as of this weekend. The company's chief marketing officer, and fourth generation family member, expained the decision was due to a desire to focus on their "land-owned locations:"

As we look to the future, we are making thoughtful decisions to ensure we continue delivering the best possible experience. This strategic shift allows us to focus on our flagship and land-owned locations, enhance spaces and develop menus; invest in innovation; and elevate our brand for years to come - Home Run Inn Chief Marketing Officer Gina Perrino Bolger, per ABC 7 Chicago

The recent closures leave Home Run Inn restaurants in Little Village (their flagship restaurant), Bolingbrook, Hillside, Darien, Woodridge (where they're headquartered), and Chicago.

Having been to a couple of their restaurants, there's something special about eating Home Run Inn pizza with friends and family in a public setting. That said, their line of frozen pizzas are the best. Don't take my word for it. They topped Consumer Reports' list of "Best Frozen Pizzas" back in 2013.

Unlike some other frozen pizza offerings, Home Run Inn's is hearty and filling, underscored by a thicker crust and a thick helping of cheese on each slice.

I would hate to see Home Run Inn disappear completely as a franchise. Founded back in 1947 by Mary and Vincent Grittiani, the company got its name when a home run from a nearby baseball game smashed through the window of the couple's tavern. From there, they not only renamed their establishment, but also have used the same pizza recipe since their inception. You have to wonder if the person who hit that home run even has a clue of his impact.
