Dubuque's Irish Hooley Was the Biggest Yet on the Back Waters Amp

Dubuque's premier Irish musical festival brought, live music, dancing, and fun all in the name of celebrating the spirit of the Irish on Saturday, August 22nd.

The 21st Annual Irish Hooley took place at Q Casino + Resort's Back Waters Amp for the first time. One of the first events held at the brand new venue, the festivities kicked off at 11am, featuring a number of bands playing traditional Irish music as well as numerous food trucks from the Tri-State area serving up delicious eats.

In its 21st year, the Hooley has officially "come of age," as emcee Ian Gould noted in his opening remarks early into the festival. It's now become a staple, late-summer event in Dubuque, attracting thousands and now going bigger after being held at the Alliant Energy Amphitheater outside the Dubuque Star Brewery in years past.

The Irish Hooley felt even bigger this year not only because of the venue, but because of the return of Gaelic Storm, a hugely popular Celtic band, which headlined the event for the first time since 2021. In order to land Gaelic Storm, a larger space was needed, hence the move to the Back Waters Amp.

Following the opening ceremony, underscored by the Dubuque Fire Pipes & Drums, the McNulty School of Irish Dance, the Wee Lads, Ballyheigue, and the Lads of Dubuque were some of the acts who took the stage. Worth noting, the Wee Lads concluded their wonderful set with a cover of "Rocky Road to Dublin," an Irish tune made more popular thanks to its inclusion in last year's Oscar-winning movie Sinners. Yeah, I was just a little excited when they launched into that song!

The event being held at the Back Waters Amp, with its new grassy field, formal seating, and concourse, allowed for the crowd to spread out more than in years past. Assembled by the Ancient Order of Hibernians of Dubuque County and the newly formed Irish Lassies, the Irish Hooley brings Irish music, culture, and festivities together for one of the most memorable events of the summer.
