Howling winds rocked most of the state of Iowa this week, leading to downed tree branches, shingles flying off roofs, and, in a lesser sense, general annoyance from everyone. I was perpetually aggravated yesterday because I could hear my locked apartment door shudder and thud for hours due to the winds coming in through my vestibule. Stories like this remind me how much worse it can be.

This week's high winds, which reached up to 60 mph in some regions of the state, caused a gas station canopy in Le Grand, IA to collapse on to a vehicle with a passenger and two dogs inside. The incident occurred in the afternoon on Wednesday, April 8th in Le Grand, which is located in Marshall County.

The Phillips 66 gas station at 806 West Main Street in Le Grand is in need of a new awning after high winds took the business' current one down. Worst of all, however, the awning toppled onto a truck-and-trailer, with the passenger unable to get out of the car due to mobile issues.

Per KWWL, when the Le Grand Fire Department and Le Grand EMS arrived on-scene, deputies helped the passenger exist the vehicle. The passenger was from Wisconsin traveling through the area. Thankfully, no one was hurt. No fuel leaked from the fuel island either.

Persistent high winds prevent the canopy from being removed, which has now rendered the Le Grand Phillips 66 on Main Street closed until further notice. You can see from the video embedded above that the canopy is positioned in such a way that it's blocking the few fuel pumps there are to use.
