I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: it’s a great time to be a Terrence Malick fan. After making only six films between 1973 and 2012, the reclusive filmmaker released two films last year (one of which has three different versions) and has two more on the way this year. The first up is his much anticipated rock and roll-infused drama Song to Song, starring Ryan Gosling, Rooney Mara, Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman.

Previously titled Weightless, Malick’s film was shot back-to-back with his previous narrative feature Knight of Cups during the 2012 Austin City Limits music festival. Malick and his cast and crew pretty much hung out at the fest with cameras, and since that year had a pretty solid line-up, you can expect to see plenty of rock and roll icons in the movie. The first trailer shows the cast hanging out with Iggy Pop, John Lydon of The Sex Pistols, and Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers, plus Val Kilmer getting kicked off a Black Lips stage. Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine, Patti Smith, and Lykki Li will also appear in the film. The real highlight of the trailer though is Gosling in a sleeveless cheetah print top:

The synopsis will tell you Song to Song is a “modern love story” about two couples, seduction, and betrayal set against the Austin music scene, but you know Malick synopses are only just a sliver of what his films are about. Gosling’s BV and Mara’s Faye are two struggling songwriters who meet Cook, Michael Fassbender’s music mogul who soon sweeps Faye away. Portman plays a waitress in a relationship with Cook, whom he seems to feed olive oil (or is it honey?) at some point in the trailer.

There’s plenty of tumbling across beds, swiveling camera movements, and voiceovers to satisfy Malick fans. It also sounds like Gosling is singing an original song over the soundtrack in case you didn’t get enough of his La La Land vocals. Song to Song will open South by Southwest next month followed by a limited release on March 17.
