Michael Jordan’s Chicago Mansion Sells After Over 11 Years on the Market
After more than a decade on the market, a Chicago and basketball legend's mansion has finally sold. This comes after a significant price-drop several years ago that still resulted in a lower sale price; nearly less than a third of the original asking price too.
Michael Jordan's 32,683 square-foot mansion in Highland Park, IL is finally off the market, selling for $9.5 million. Serendipitously, the sale was completed nearly 11 years to the day it was first listed (December 17th, 2013). Jordan's original asking price was a whopping $29 million.
The house entered escrow in September, but the price remained unavailable to the public until recently, per ESPN. The listing closed on Tuesday.
Jordan kept his $29 million asking price until he lowered it in May 2015 to $14.855 million. Why the strange number? 1 + 4 + 8 + 5 + 5 = 23, Jordan's jersey number, which was a crafty little move, I must say.
The undisclosed buyer paid $9.5 million for the property, which is 67% below the original asking price. You could say it was a steal, but there are significant issues with the property and its location, according to real estate columnist Bob Goldsborough.
Jordan's mansion was built in 1995, and is complete with nine bedrooms and 19 baths (15 bull), per the Zillow listing. It features a regulation-sized basketball court as well as:
- A putting green
- Tennis court
- Cigar room
- Circular infinity pool
- A library
- A 14-car garage
- A gate with a giant "23" on its doors
Some of those features, namely the putting green and cigar room, are so quintessentially Michael Jordan it's hilarious.
Goldsborough told ABC 7 Chicago that while it's practically unheard of for a mansion owned by a celebrity to spend over a decade on the market, there are issues plaguing the Highland Park property. For one, it's recessed in an area near railroad tracks and a forest preserve, so development won't be easy.
Furthermore, even at the time of its listing, its interior design is clearly dated back to the 1990s, which might've been a turnoff to prospective buyers. Judging from the shocking low final sale price (relatively speaking), it sounds like the buyer made the purchase with the intent to remodel.
Jordan's Highland Park, IL mansion sells a little over a month after it was revealed that Michael Jordan's Steak House in Oak Brook would close on December 21st following an over-20 year run in the city. The eatery was known for its quality steaks, appetizers, and cocktails. Read more about the steakhouse closing here.
