Popular Cascade Bakery Closes Upon Owner's Retirement

A popular Cascade dessert and bakery known for its colorful "kreations" has closed up shop following the retirement of the shop's longtime owner.

It's the end of an era for a prominent, delicious hometown bakery in Cascade. The Telegraph Herald revealed that Koppes Kreations, located at 109 Adams Street SE, has closed its doors. Its last day of operation was Saturday, May 3rd, which was the day after owner Nikki Steffen held a retirement party.

The Telegraph Herald caught up with Steffen, who started decorating cakes roughly 25 years ago. When she made the move to decorate a cake for her daughter, she found herself getting various decorative cake requests from friends and family. That prompted the launch of Koppes Kreations, which expanded from her home bakery to the business' Adams Street location in Cascade in 2021.

Steffen described the business' growth as "organic," and she chalked up not only her delicious recipes, but her ability to capitalize on trends and stay modern as reason for the shop's success.

With the closure of Koppes Kreations, Steffen plans to auction off her remaining inventory at the end of the month. She mulled over selling the business, but opined the difficulty of a buyer assuming ownership of a bakery that not only prioritized baked good, but high-end decorating services, per Telegraph Herald.

It's a move that, in my opinion, makes a great deal of sense. Part of the allure of Koppes Kreations was Steffen's ability to create designs and decorations that were uniquely hers. It's hard to assume control of someone else's vision. In the realm of baked goods, you have to adopt your own methods, skillset, and wisdom, something Steffen has done from the jump.
