A new study from the website ISelect took a look at fatal crashes on a macro-level, examining the entire United States to figure out where the most collisions occur. In doing so, ISelect curated a list of the top ten most dangerous roads in the state of Iowa.

With the ubiquity of vehicles and roadways in America, it should come as no surprise that the United States has the highest average national crash risk score of the three countries ISelect examined. It netted a 39.48 nationwide. Before we look at Iowa, we'll look at some of the national statistics.

Some Crash Statistics in the United States:

ISelect's study also found that state highways, not interstates, have the most deadly accidents in the country. The riskiest roads were found in the following states:

  • Mississippi
  • Texas
  • Tennessee
  • Wyoming
  • Louisiana

Texas has lower highway speeds than other states, but the heavy rain, intense head, and high road and intersection density plays a role in increasing collisions. Conversely, Hawaii is deemed the safest place to drive in the country due to minimal road and intersection density.

Crash Statistics in Iowa:

Over five years, Iowa has recorded 1,585 crashes. Here's the break down of where those crashes occur:

  • State highways: 27%
  • U.S. highways: 36%
  • Interstates: 19%
  • Local streets: 18%

Below is a look at the top 10 most dangerous roads in Iowa, with the number of total crashes on said roads as well:
