Oprah Has Rhinestone Eyebrows in First Photos of Ava DuVernay’s ‘A Wrinkle in Time’
It’s a big day for independent directors making the jump to studio work and proudly bringing their blackness with them. We got a look at the latest photos of Ryan Coogler‘s Black Panther just this morning, and now Entertainment Weekly has also released a preview of Ava DuVernay’s adaptation of the children’s fantasy book A Wrinkle in Time. The Selma and 13th filmmaker has been hard at work in New Zealand, marshaling the largest studio budget ever entrusted to a woman of color ($100 million), and she’s got a whole lot to show for it. There’s magic, wonder, diverse representation and a whole bunch of other stuff, but mostly, there’s Oprah’s eyebrows.
She portrays the “wizened Mrs. Which,” who guides our girl Meg (introducing the magnificently-named Storm Reid) through the space-time continuum along with her cosmic pals Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling) and Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon). Oprah’s eyebrows, though — they’re made of rhinestones. Why? We don’t know, but I, for one, cannot wait to find out. Take a closer gander at Kaling’s Cleopatra hairdo and Witherspoon’s redheaded dye job while you’re at it:
EW’s report gives a fuller idea of what to expect in terms of plot and the overall look of the film, but here are a couple of highlights. DuVernay told EW:
I saw so much beauty in [this book], but also so much meaning. [Author Madeline L’Engle] is a very radical thinker and she embedded her sense of what society should and could be in this piece, and a lot of it I agree with. And through that, the story of this girl saving the world and being out there in the universe slaying the darkness, it also says a lot about slaying our own dragons.
Not to put too fine a point on it, but: studio filmmaking is good now. Oprah. Rhinestone. Eyebrows. A Wrinkle in Time also stars Storm Reid, Zach Galifianakis, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Chris Pine, and hits theaters March 9, 2018.
